Meat grown at Drift farmstead

Beef

At Drift Farmstead we raise Scottish Highland beef cows.  Prized for their lean meat, cold hardiness, and natural herding lifestyle,  Scottish Highlanders thrive in Vermont’s climate and on our pasture-based farm.

Along with providing lean meat with a lower percentage of cholesterol, the cows play an important role in helping to create a sustainable closed-loop system on the farm.

As they graze, the cows put nutrients into the soil.   In the winter — when the pastures are covered with snow — we compost their manure, which becomes fertilizer for our vegetable gardens.

Lamb & Goat

In honor of Vermont history and its’ 1800’s sheep craze, we raise meat breed sheep and goats. Our lamb and sometimes goat sausages can be found at the farm store. Our sheep attempt to follow the cows grazing rotations and provide ample fleece for fiber arts for our school.

Pork

Do you love bacon?  So do we — that’s why we raise Tamworth x Old Black pigs.

This heritage breed are efficient grazers who  live happily on pasture and produce long loins — perfect for bacon.

Of course, they also produce prized pork chops, roasts, hams, and steaks.
